Later Saturday after getting to Tracy's home we all went to sleep. Then we woke up later than we had planned Saturday morning and took the train into the city. It was a beautiful day! We went to a street market and got smoothies then we headed over to check out my dorm. One of the RA's at my dorm was standing out front and told me that I could check in today, so I did. We went up to my room and I have a beautiful view of the city and was so excited! Looking out my window from the 29th floor of my dorm in Midtown East, New York, I realized this is real. Then, we ventured around the city some more and ate pizza at a sidewalk cafe.
Saturday evening, Tracy's nephew, Patrick, helped me bring all of my stuff into the city. We took the train and getting on the train was a bit difficult. Once we arrived in Penn Station, we got a cab and took it to my dorm room, this was much easier than carrying all of my stuff onto the subway and then walking through the city.
I've had an opportunity to go out and meet people and everyone is really nice and easy to get along with. People always ask you where your from and what are you doing in New York. Usually when I tell people that I am interning at FoxNews they immediately want to know why and a discussion of politics always ensues. I have no problem standing up for what I believe and explaining why it is I feel this way. And so far all of the conversations have ended well. I was also surprised at how safe I felt out in the city.
Sunday morning, I got up early and we all took the train out to Montauk it's a beach town on Long Island right next to the Hamptons. On the train I saw several very beautiful homes and I was surprised that there were so many trees. There was a little art show that we went to, it was very unique. Then we hung out at the beach for a little bit, until we had to get on the train for a 3 hour ride back to Penn Station.
After Penn Station, I took the subway by myself for the first time back to my dorm. I was a little nervous, but I knew I could do it and I made it back to my dorm safely. I had orientation then I met my two roommates. They are sweet girls and I think we will get along great this summer. One is interning at Marie Claire and the other is interning at Madison Square Garden. This morning one of my roommates told me I was talking in my sleep last night! I think I do that sometimes when I sleep in different places.
Today, I had a bunch of errands to do in the city before I go to work tomorrow. I had to figure out how I was going to get to Fox News. It's about a 30 minute walk from my dorm. I was so excited when I saw the building today and knowing that I'll be going to work there tomorrow! I also went to Bed Bath and Beyond and carried an ironing board a couple blocks through the city. I also went to the Grocery store. There are no Wal-Mart's in the city. The only major chain store that I've found in the city is K-Mart. Otherwise it's the small corner grocery and you don't buy things in mass quantities! Tonight, I went with my roommates to Pink Berry they only have them in New York and L.A. They serve different flavors of frozen yogurt and you can get everything from fruit to fruity pebbles and gummy worms in your yogurt. I'm not usually a huge yogurt fan, but it was really good!
I'm a little nervous about starting my internship at Fox News, but I am really excited too. I've picked out the outfit I'm going to wear and it's already ironed. I can't imagine how I'm going to fill in the morning when I'm walking there. I love the city and all the different people. I know I am going to have a great summer and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity!
